The prestigious award that certifies the quality of water and recognizes virtuous environmental practices was presented to Mayor Luisa Lavelli this year too
TUESDAY 14 MAY 2024
For the second consecutive year, the famous Giamaica Beach in Sirmione has received the important recognition of Blue Flag, symbol of quality, commitment and environmental awareness.
The prestigious international environmental certification was delivered on May 14th to Mayor Luisa Lavelli at the Italian headquarters of the FEE, Foundation for Environmental Education in Rome.
The Blue Flag is awarded to seaside and lake resorts that meet rigorous water and beach quality criteria and that implement sustainable land management practices, with particular attention to accessibility for people with disabilities. This recognition, obtained also thanks to the coordination of Luca Fila and the support of the Garda Community, enhances Sirmione’s tourist offering, attesting to the community’s commitment to responsible management of the coast and beaches while respecting the environment. The process that led to the awarding of the prestigious environmental certification would not have been possible without the active participation and indispensable support of the Lombardy Regional Museums Directorate and the Directorate of the archaeological area of the Grotte di Catullo.
Thanks also go to all those who every year implement environmental education projects and activities, including the Trebeschi Institute, Sirmione Servizi and the local associations.
FEE, recognized by UNESCO as a world leader in environmental education and sustainable development, awards the Blue Flag Award every year in 49 countries around the world. The program aims to promote sustainable land management in coastal municipalities, encouraging environmentally friendly and respectful environmental policies.
The quality of bathing water is the main criterion for the evaluation, but other aspects are also considered such as environmental education, waste management, traffic regulation, safety and beach services.
