The prestigious international environmental award was presented on May 12, 2023 to the Mayor of Sirmione for the famous Jamaica beach.

The Blue Flag is a recognition also obtained thanks to the coordination and support for the candidacy of the Community of Garda, it represents for Sirmione an important element in its tourist offer: it is a quality certificate that certifies the community’s commitment in the management of the coast and beaches respecting the environment and nature.

The prestigious recognition is awarded to seaside and lake towns that meet rigorous and specific water and beach quality criteria, implement virtuous practices of sustainable management of the territory with attention also to aspects relating to accessibility for people with disabilities.

The Blue Flag award is awarded by the FEE, Foundation for Environmental Education, an international organization recognized by UNESCO as a world leader in the field of environmental education and sustainable development and is awarded every year in 49 different countries around the world.

The main objective of the program is to promote sustainable management of the territory in the coastal municipalities through a series of indications that place attention and care for the environment at the basis of political choices.
For the purposes of the evaluation, the quality of the bathing water is the primary criterion: only places whose waters are found to be excellent can submit their candidacy. Other significant areas of evaluation include environmental education, waste management, vehicular traffic regulation, safety and beach services.
